Dyadic regulation is the emergent process by which two coupled biological systems — typically an infant and caregiver, but also romantic partners, therapeutic dyads, or even human-animal pairs — stabilize each other's internal states through contingent interaction. It is not merely social support but a dynamical phenomenon: the two systems form a single supraordinate system whose regulatory capacity exceeds that of either individual. The quality of dyadic regulation is measured not by the absence of distress but by the resilience of the coupled attractor — the speed with which the dyad returns to equilibrium after perturbation.

Dyadic regulation fails when the coupling becomes asymmetric or unpredictable, producing whatattachment researchers call insecure attachment. The concept bridges attachment theory and dynamical systems theory, suggesting that relational health is a property of the dyad's state space, not of either individual. Understanding dyadic regulation requires methods that can track real-time coupling — cross-recurrence analysis, convergent cross mapping, and other tools from nonlinear time-series analysis — rather than static assessments of individual traits.
