Paranoid-schizoid position

The paranoid-schizoid position is one of two fundamental psychic organizations described by Melanie Klein, characterized by the splitting of experience into all-good and all-bad representations with no ambiguity tolerated. It is not a developmental stage but a dynamical attractor — a recurrent mode of system organization that the psyche falls into when anxiety exceeds integration capacity. In this position, the self and objects are fragmented, persecutory anxiety dominates, and the primary defensive operation is the evacuation of badness through projective identification.

The paranoid-schizoid position is not pathological per se. It is the psyche's emergency mode, its failsafe when the depressive position's complexity cannot be sustained. The pathology lies not in entering the position but in becoming stuck there — when a self-sealing system rigidifies around splitting as its permanent organization, incapable of the grief, guilt, and reintegration that characterize the depressive position.
