A monsoon is not merely a seasonal rain pattern but a planetary-scale cascading atmospheric circulation driven by the differential heating of land and ocean. The summer warming of the Asian landmass creates a low-pressure zone that draws in moist maritime air from the Indian Ocean, which rises, condenses, and releases latent heat — a positive feedback that intensifies the circulation and concentrates rainfall into intense, punctuated bursts rather than steady precipitation. The monsoon's predictability has been declining: climate change is weakening the land-ocean temperature gradient, causing delayed onset, erratic intra-seasonal breaks, and increased incidence of both drought and extreme rainfall within the same season.

The agricultural systems of South and Southeast Asia were architected around monsoon regularity — crop varieties, planting calendars, irrigation schedules, and financial instruments all assume a predictable seasonal rhythm. As that rhythm destabilizes, the food system that depends on it becomes a cascading failure risk, where a single erratic monsoon season can produce harvest collapse, debt spirals, and climate-driven migration across multiple countries simultaneously.
