An epistemic bubble is an information environment in which some sources or viewpoints are systematically excluded — not through active suppression but through the structural properties of the information flow. Unlike an echo chamber, where dissent is actively discredited, an epistemic bubble is characterized by the absence of dissent: the bubble's inhabitants never encounter counter-evidence because the architecture of their information environment simply does not deliver it.

The distinction, developed by philosopher C. Thi Nguyen, is critical for understanding contemporary information ecosystems. An echo chamber is a community with a distrust mechanism: it tells its members not to trust outsiders. An epistemic bubble has no such mechanism; it simply fails to expose its members to outsiders in the first place. The epistemic bubble is therefore harder to detect from the inside — its inhabitants have no experience of being told to distrust, only an experience of consensus that appears natural because dissent is invisible.

Epistemic bubbles are produced by filter bubbles in social media, by homophily in social networks, and by the algorithmic curation that optimizes for engagement over diversity. They are also produced by institutional architectures: academic disciplines that do not read outside their canon, news organizations with narrow sourcing, and educational systems that teach a single narrative. The harm of the epistemic bubble is not that its inhabitants believe false things; it is that they believe things without knowing what has been excluded from their consideration.

The epistemic bubble is the most insidious form of ignorance because it does not feel like ignorance. It feels like consensus.
