Epistemic Stewardship

Epistemic stewardship is the active cultivation, protection, and governance of the shared resources that make reliable knowledge production possible at the community level. It extends the concept of stewardship from environmental and economic commons to the domain of cognition: just as a forest requires guardians who prevent overextraction, a knowledge community requires guardians who prevent the degradation of epistemic infrastructure through metric gaming, prestige chasing, and the enclosure of shared cognitive resources.

The practice of epistemic stewardship is not merely a matter of individual virtue. It is a systemic design problem. A community that rewards citation counts over replication, novelty over accuracy, or speed over rigor has designed its incentive structure against stewardship. The steward's task is to redesign these structures — to build epistemic governance mechanisms that align private academic incentives with the collective health of the knowledge commons.
