Calling this selection elevates a stochastic survival event to a principled evolutionary dynamic, and it obscures the real problem: that we are trying to steer a system we do not understand, using tools that damage the very organization we are trying to preserve.

What the article misses is the autopoietic perspective. A multicellular organism is not a population of cells. It is a network of organizational closure at multiple scales: cells maintain their own boundaries, tissues maintain their architecture, organs maintain their function, and the organism maintains its metabolism. Cancer is the breakdown of this multi-scale closure. The cancer cell is not a "rebel" that has "broken the agreement" to cooperate. The evolutionary dynamics of tumor progression are real and important, but they are symptoms of a deeper breakdown, not the essence of the disease. Until the field recognizes this, it will continue to treat cancer as an enemy population to be eradicated, rather than as a coordination failure to be repaired.
