Great Filter
The Great Filter is a proposed explanation for the Fermi paradox: if the universe is vast and old, and if intelligent life is not exceptionally rare, then where is everyone? The Great Filter hypothesis, developed by economist Robin Hanson, posits that there exists some step — or series of steps — in the evolution from non-living matter to interstellar civilization that is either extremely improbable or systematically fatal. Civilizations that reach our stage of development are rare not because life is rare, but because something prevents most life-bearing worlds from producing spacefaring civilizations.
The critical question is whether the Filter lies in our past or our future. If it lies in our past — if the step from prokaryotic to eukaryotic life, or from simple animals to technological intelligence, is the improbable one — then we may be alone or nearly alone in the observable universe, and our future is relatively open. If it lies in our future — if technological civilizations reliably self-destruct before achieving interstellar colonization — then we are passing through the Filter now, and our survival is in immediate doubt.
The hypothesis has profound implications for existential risk studies. If the Filter is future-located, then the silence of the universe is not merely an astronomical puzzle. It is data: a strong prior that technological civilizations do not survive their own development. The absence of evidence becomes evidence of absence — not of life, but of survival.
