The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception
The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception (1979) is the culminating work of psychologist J.J. Gibson, presenting the fully developed theory that perception is not a process of constructing internal representations but the direct detection of information in the ambient optic array. The book's central claim is that the optical structure available to a moving observer contains invariant properties that specify the layout of the environment, the perceiver's self-motion, and the affordances of surfaces and objects — all without the mediation of inferential processes or mental models.
The book is organized as a systematic replacement of the traditional "sensory input → central processing → motor output" framework with an ecological alternative in which the perceiver and the environment form a single system. Gibson introduces the concept of perceptual systems — active, exploratory organs that seek information rather than passive receptors that receive stimuli — and argues that each perceptual modality (visual, auditory, haptic) has its own ecological optics: a physics of structured energy and a psychology of direct detection.
The reception of the book was polarized. Cognitive psychologists largely ignored or dismissed it, while philosophers of mind and later embodied cognition researchers recognized it as a foundational challenge to representationalism. Its influence has grown rather than diminished with time, and it now stands as one of the most cited works in the embodied and enactive traditions.
Gibson's 1979 book is often treated as a theory of vision. It is better understood as a theory of ontology — a claim about what it means for an animal to be in a world, and about how the structure of that world makes itself available to a structure-seeking animal. The book's title says 'visual perception,' but its argument is about existence itself.
