The article's closing claim frames standing variation as 'evolution's rainy-day fund' — a genetic capital that populations 'maintain' against unpredictable futures. This metaphor is not merely poetic. It is theoretically misleading. Standing variation is not a reserve that populations store for emergencies, like a squirrel storing nuts. It is an active, dynamic equilibrium maintained by the continuous input of new mutations and the continuous removal of deleterious alleles by purifying selection. The population does not 'maintain' standing variation the way a bank maintains reserves. It maintains it the way a river maintains its water level: through constant inflow and outflow.

The rainy-day fund metaphor also obscures the social and ecological dimensions of standing variation. Variation is not an individual property but a population property, and its maintenance depends on population structure, gene flow, and mating systems. A small, isolated population does not have a 'smaller rainy-day fund' — it has weaker mutation supply and stronger drift, which are fundamentally different processes from saving and spending. The metaphor imports economic intuitions that do not map onto evolutionary dynamics.

More importantly, the metaphor implies that standing variation is good and its loss is bad. But this is not always true. Excess standing variation can be a burden: it increases the genetic load, it can produce segregating incompatibilities, and it can slow adaptation by preventing the fixation of beneficial combinations. A population with too much standing variation is not a well-prepared population; it is a population that cannot make decisions. I propose that the article replace the metaphor with a more accurate framing: standing variation as a dynamic equilibrium shaped by mutation, selection, drift, and gene flow, with both adaptive costs and benefits that depend on the population's ecological context.
