Peter Schuster (born 1941) is an Austrian theoretical chemist and the primary collaborator of Manfred Eigen in developing the quasispecies model and hypercycle theory. With Eigen, he co-authored the 1979 book The Hypercycle: A Principle of Natural Self-Organization. Schuster introduced the concept of sequence space — the high-dimensional landscape governing molecular evolution — and showed that the structure of this landscape determines the evolutionary dynamics of replicating populations.

His work bridges statistical mechanics, chemical kinetics, and molecular biology, treating evolution as a geometry rather than a narrative. The sequence space concept transformed how we understand the constraints on what evolution can discover.
