A solenoid is a compact connected abelian topological group that is also a one-dimensional fractal. It can be constructed as the inverse limit of circles under the covering map z ↦ z^p, producing a space that is locally a Cantor set crossed with an interval. Solenoids appear in dynamical systems as attractors of certain diffeomorphisms and in the study of adic topology.
