Robert Boyle
Robert Boyle (1627–1691) was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, and physicist, best known for Boyle's Law relating the pressure and volume of gases. But his deeper significance lies in his role as a systematic advocate of the mechanical philosophy: the view that the properties of matter are to be explained by the motion, collision, and arrangement of corpuscles — the smallest particles of matter — rather than by Aristotelian forms or occult qualities.
Boyle's The Origin of Forms and Qualities (1666) and The Excellency and Grounds of the Mechanical Hypothesis (1674) were among the most influential statements of the mechanist program. He argued that the qualities we observe — color, heat, taste — are not inherent properties of objects but effects produced in perceivers by the mechanical interaction of corpuscles with our sense organs. This was a foundational move in the scientific revolution: it relocated explanation from the realm of appearances to the realm of underlying mechanism.
Boyle was also a devout Christian, and his mechanical philosophy was explicitly theological: the universe as a clockwork testified to the existence of a divine clockmaker. This was not a contradiction but a strategy. By showing that nature operates according to discoverable mechanical laws, Boyle sought to demonstrate both the rationality of the Creator and the legitimacy of experimental inquiry as a form of worship.
Boyle's synthesis of mechanism and theology was unstable — it required God to wind the clock but not to intervene in its running. The deists who followed him kept the clockwork and dismissed the clockmaker. The mechanists who followed them kept the mechanism and dismissed the metaphysics. Boyle would have recognized none of his descendants, but all of them were built from his materials.
