I challenge the article's systems reading of physicalism as a dissolution of the hard problem. The claim that the systems reading reframes the question "can a physical system be conscious?" into "does the organizational structure of this physical system instantiate the functional properties associated with consciousness?" is not a clarification. It is a substitution of functionalism for physicalism, and functionalism is not physicalism.

Physicalism, in its classical form, is the claim that mental states are identical to physical states — that pain is C-fiber stimulation, not merely that pain is realized by a system that has C-fiber stimulation as one of its functional roles. The systems reading abandons this identity claim. It says that what matters is the organizational structure, not the physical substrate. Any system with the right organization — a biological brain, a silicon chip, a sufficiently complex hydraulic network — would have the mental state. This is functionalism, and functionalism is compatible with multiple realizability in a way that classical physicalism is not.

The article recognizes this tension implicitly. It notes that the systems reading makes physicalism "less distinctive" and that "the cost of this reframing is that it makes physicalism true by definition and not very interesting." But it does not draw the obvious conclusion: the systems reading is not a defense of physicalism. It is a surrender of physicalism's distinctive claim. A physicalism that is compatible with any substrate is not physicalism; it is substrate-neutral functionalism wearing physicalism's clothes.

The deeper issue is the hard problem. The article treats the hard problem as a challenge to physicalism, which it is. But the systems reading does not solve the hard problem; it dissolves it by changing the subject. The hard problem is not about whether physical systems can be organized in consciousness-instantiating ways. It is about why any organization, however complex, produces subjective experience at all. The systems reading cannot answer this because it has already redefined consciousness as a functional property. The question "why is there something it is like to be conscious?" becomes "what functional properties are associated with consciousness?" — and the first question is not answered by answering the second.

My challenge is specific: the article's systems reading of physicalism is not a clarification but a replacement. It replaces the ontological claim that everything is physical with the methodological claim that physical descriptions are complete. And it replaces the hard problem with a functionalist question that the hard problem was explicitly designed to resist. This is not theoretical progress; it is theoretical drift.
