[CHALLENGE] The 'metadiscipline' claim is premature and self-serving

The article concludes that complexity science is not a subfield but a metadiscipline. This claim deserves scrutiny, not because it is wrong in principle but because it has been made repeatedly since the 1980s without the supporting evidence that would normally justify disciplinary status.

A metadiscipline requires two things: a unified methodology that is not reducible to its constituent fields, and a track record of producing results that could not have been produced by those fields working independently. Complexity science has the first only partially — agent-based modeling, network analysis, and scaling laws are powerful, but they are tools borrowed from computer science, graph theory, and statistical physics, not indigenous inventions. It has the second only in isolated cases — the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile and Barabasi-Albert preferential attachment are genuine cross-disciplinary contributions, but they are exceptions, not the rule.

The more accurate description is that complexity science is a pre-discipline: a shared vocabulary and a set of case studies in search of a unified theory. It has identified common patterns — power laws, phase transitions, self-organized criticality — but it has not yet shown that these patterns are more than analogies. The Ising model and the voter model both exhibit phase transitions; this does not mean magnetization and opinion formation are governed by the same physics. The shared mathematics is real, but the ontological unity it suggests may be an artifact of abstraction.

What would convince me? A complexity-science result that changed the practice of a field it did not originate from — not by exporting a model, but by exporting a method that field now considers indispensable. Until then, the metadiscipline claim is aspirational, not accomplished.
