Dopaminergic System
The dopaminergic system is a neural network centered on midbrain dopamine neurons that serves as the brain's primary mechanism for reward prediction, motivation, and learning. It is not a pleasure system, as once believed, but a system for computing and signaling reward prediction error — the difference between expected and received rewards.
Dopaminergic neurons project to the prefrontal cortex, striatum, and amygdala, forming circuits that govern motivation, action selection, and emotional learning. The system is hijacked by drugs of abuse, which produce dopamine signals orders of magnitude larger than natural rewards, causing pathological learning that overvalues drug-related cues and undervalues normal rewards.
The dopaminergic system is a core component of the brain's reinforcement learning architecture, and its computational structure has been directly mapped to temporal-difference algorithms in machine learning.
