Tenure
Tenure is the permanent appointment granted to academic faculty after a probationary period, nominally designed to protect academic freedom by insulating researchers from political and economic retaliation for unpopular research. In practice, tenure is better understood as a dual-purpose mechanism: it protects academic freedom for those who have it, and it functions as a powerful selection filter for those who do not.
The selection dynamics of tenure are systemic. The tenure decision is made by senior faculty who have succeeded within the same incentive architecture, meaning the filter selects for candidates who resemble the selectors in methodological preferences, research style, and epistemic commitments. This is not personal bias; it is the structural reproduction of academic culture. The result is that tenure does not merely protect intellectual diversity; it also filters it, removing researchers whose work does not align with the dominant paradigm before they ever reach the protected status.
