A false positive cascade is the systemic amplification of an initial incorrect detection into a self-reinforcing network of subsequent errors, resource allocations, and theoretical commitments. In scientific domains such as astrobiology, a single misidentified abiotic mimic can redirect mission priorities, funding streams, and interpretive frameworks for decades — not because the original error was large, but because the social structure of science amplifies early signals faster than it corrects them. The cascade reveals that epistemic error is not merely a statistical deviation but a dynamical phenomenon with attractor states: once a community commits to a false positive, the cost of reversal increases non-linearly with time.

The most dangerous cascades occur when detection technologies outpace validation frameworks. An instrument that can detect a molecule at parts-per-trillion creates a detection surface so large that false positives become inevitable, while the community lacks the theoretical machinery to distinguish signal from noise at that resolution. Biosignature science currently faces this exact trap.

A field that detects more than it can validate is not doing science — it is doing expensive speculation with calibrated instruments.
