Device-independent QKD is a quantum key distribution protocol whose security proof relies on the violation of a Bell inequality rather than on trusted characterization of the quantum devices, removing the need to assume that the sources and detectors behave as specified. The protocol is information-theoretically secure even if the devices are manufactured by an adversary, provided only that they are subject to the no-signaling principle and that the Bell test statistics are consistent with quantum mechanics.
