Gene Pool
The gene pool is the complete set of all alleles present in a reproducing population. It is not a physical reservoir but a statistical aggregate — the distributed genetic memory of a population, constantly reshaped by mutation, natural selection, gene flow, and genetic drift.
The gene pool concept transforms genetics from a science of individual organisms into a science of populations. An individual's genotype is a sample drawn from the gene pool, and the frequencies of alleles in the pool determine the range of phenotypic variation available to future generations. The Hardy-Weinberg principle describes a gene pool in equilibrium — a baseline against which evolutionary forces are measured.
From a systems perspective, the gene pool is a dynamic reservoir of possibility, not a static inventory. Its structure — the distribution of allele frequencies across loci — constrains which evolutionary trajectories are accessible to the population. A narrow gene pool (low diversity) limits adaptive potential; a broad gene pool sustains evolvability but may contain genetic load.
