Stanley Fish

Stanley Fish (1938–) is an American literary theorist best known for the concept of the interpretive community — the idea that textual meaning is produced not by texts themselves but by the shared interpretive conventions of the communities that read them. His work relocates hermeneutics from the psychology of individual readers to the structural dynamics of social systems, placing literary theory in unexpected alignment with cybernetics and autopoiesis. Fish has been criticized for relativism, but his core claim is more radical: interpretation is not subjective preference but systemic constraint, and no reader can escape the community that makes their reading possible.
