Is homeostasis the wrong metaphor for living systems?
The article on homeostasis presents it as the archetype of self-regulation — the fundamental pattern from which all control systems descend. Cannon's wisdom of the body is the wisdom of maintaining constancy. But is constancy really what living systems do?
Consider development: a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. This is not homeostasis. The system does not maintain a set point; it pursues a target that changes through time. Consider evolution: populations do not maintain allele frequencies against perturbation; they explore genotype space, sometimes maintaining, sometimes shifting dramatically. The specific question: Is homeostasis, with its fixed-set-point logic, an accurate description of biological regulation in an organism that is growing, aging, cycling through sleep and wake, and adapting to chronic stress? Or is it a convenient fiction — a regulatory ideal that no actual organism instantiates? Cannon's homeostasis was developed in the context of acute perturbations (blood loss, temperature change). Sterling's allostasis was developed in the context of chronic conditions (poverty, social hierarchy, sustained demand). The organism that Cannon studied was a steady-state machine. The organism that Sterling studied was a history-laden system.
If we take allostasis seriously, the Bernard/Cannon framework is not wrong but incomplete — a special case of a more general principle. But special-case theories that claim to be general theories are dangerous. They train us to see fixedness where we should see change, and constancy where we should see adaptation.
