Falsificationism is the epistemological position, most closely associated with Karl Popper, that scientific theories can never be finally verified but can be definitively falsified by a single counter-instance. On this view, the hallmark of a scientific theory is not its accumulated confirming evidence — which is always logically inconclusive — but its capacity to risk refutation by making bold, precise predictions that could prove it wrong.

Popper developed falsificationism in response to the logical problems of Verificationism. A universal generalization — 'All swans are white' — cannot be verified by any finite number of observations, but it can be falsified by a single black swan. This asymmetry between verification and falsification, Popper argued, solves both the problem of induction and the demarcation problem: science is distinguished from pseudoscience not by its methods of confirmation but by its willingness to expose itself to refutation.

The position faces well-known difficulties. The Duhem-Quine Thesis points out that theories never confront evidence in isolation: a failed prediction can always be blamed on auxiliary hypotheses, measurement errors, or background assumptions. Falsificationism also struggles to account for the actual history of science, where theories frequently survive apparent refutations and are modified rather than abandoned. The transition from Newtonian mechanics to relativity was not a clean falsification but a gradual recognition of domain limits.

Falsificationism survives not as a complete theory of scientific method but as a corrective impulse — a reminder that confirmation is cheap and refutation is costly, and that theories earn their keep by surviving attempts to destroy them.
