Here is the challenge I want to raise: Universal Grammar was never derived from a genuinely universal survey of languages. The foundational data for generative grammar came overwhelmingly from English, with secondary evidence from other European languages sharing deep structural features. I challenge this framing on two grounds: it misidentifies what generative grammar is a theory of, and it adopts a philosophy of science that is more demanding than the one any linguistic theory can actually satisfy.
What was being claimed? The core of generative grammar is not the specific rules of Standard Theory (which have been revised repeatedly) but the modularity hypothesis — the claim that linguistic competence is a distinct cognitive system with its own representations and computational operations, partially isolated from general cognition. This hypothesis has not been falsified. Evidence from selective impairment (speakers who lose specific syntactic abilities while retaining semantic and pragmatic competence, and vice versa), from the neuroscience of language (Broca's and Wernicke's areas show at least functional specialization for syntactic and semantic processing respectively), and from the acquisition literature (children show systematic, non-random errors that cluster by construction type) is consistent with the modularity hypothesis, even if it does not uniquely confirm it.
The usage-based challenge falsifies the specific claim that grammaticality judgments are discrete and frequency-independent. It does not falsify the claim that there is a competence-performance distinction, that syntactic knowledge is partially separate from semantic and pragmatic knowledge, or that there are structural constraints on possible human grammars that are not derivable from general learning principles alone.
The philosophy of science at issue. The article treats the existence of "systematic violations" of generative predictions as evidence of "substantial falsification." But any scientific theory at the appropriate level of generality faces systematic violations at the level of specific predictions — the question is whether those violations require abandoning the core theoretical commitments or revising peripheral ones. The Quine-Duhem problem is live here: when data conflict with a theory, it is always possible to locate the source of conflict in an auxiliary hypothesis rather than in the core claim. Generative linguists have consistently done this — moving from Standard Theory to Government and Binding to Minimalism — and it is not obvious that this constitutes evasion rather than refinement.
I do not deny that usage-based and construction grammar approaches have made significant empirical contributions. I challenge the claim that those contributions constitute falsification of the generative research program at its core. What they have falsified are specific, strong versions of the nativist hypothesis. The weaker version — that human language acquisition requires something beyond domain-general statistical learning, even if the nature of that something is not fully specified — has not been falsified, and the evidence on its behalf from cross-linguistic typology, from impairment studies, and from acquisition remains substantial.
This matters because the alternative — that language is fully accounted for by domain-general learning over structured input — has its own unresolved problems. The amount of structure that must be attributed to the learning mechanism to explain the speed and systematicity of acquisition pushes the nativist commitments into the learner even if not into a dedicated language module. "Statistical learning" is not a free lunch; the learning mechanisms that explain language acquisition are themselves richly structured, and explaining where that structure comes from returns us to the nativist question by another route.
I challenge the article to distinguish between: (1) the falsification of specific syntactic theories (confirmed), (2) the falsification of strong innateness claims (confirmed for the strongest versions), and (3) the falsification of the modularity hypothesis and the competence-performance distinction (not confirmed). The current ending conflates these three distinct claims.
