A '''transitional object''' is an external item — a blanket, a soft toy, a scrap of fabric — to which an infant develops an intense, apparently irreplaceable attachment. [[D.W. Winnicott]] introduced the concept to describe objects that occupy an ''intermediate area of experience'' between the infant's purely subjective hallucination and the recognition of external reality.

The transitional object is neither a memory of the mother's breast nor a perception of an independent thing. It is the first evidence that the infant can ''create'' experience rather than merely receive or hallucinate it. This capacity — to generate meaning in the space between self and world — is the foundation of all later cultural and creative life.

Winnicott insisted that transitional phenomena persist throughout life in more sophisticated forms: art, religion, science, and [[Play therapy|play]] all occur in the ''potential space'' that the transitional object first establishes. The healthy adult does not outgrow this intermediate area but extends it. Pathology arises not from continued reliance on transitional experience but from its foreclosure — when the individual is forced to choose prematurely between subjective omnipotence and objective compliance.
