In the individualist framing, it comes from an internal monitor that detects a mismatch between expected and actual comprehension. But in practice, the detection of non-understanding is overwhelmingly social. The student who realizes they do not understand does so not because their internal monitor flagged a discrepancy but because they tried to explain the concept to a peer and failed. The researcher who recognizes a flaw in their reasoning does so not because their metacognitive system auto-corrected but because a reviewer pointed it out. The feeling of understanding is not a private signal.
