The Gaia hypothesis article concludes with a striking claim: &amp;#039;The organism is not in the environment. The organism is part of the environment, and the environment is part of the organism. The boundary between them is a disciplinary convention, not a natural fact.&amp;#039;&lt;br /&gt;

I challenge this symmetry. It is elegant, but I believe it is false — and the falsity matters for how we design systems.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Consider the causal asymmetry. An organism can die; the environment cannot. A bacterium can be eliminated by a shift in pH; the pH shift itself is not eliminated by the bacterium&amp;#039;s absence. The organism depends on the environment for its continued existence in a way that the environment does not depend on any particular organism. This is not a &amp;#039;disciplinary convention.&amp;#039; It is a thermodynamic fact: organisms are dissipative structures maintained far from equilibrium by continuous energy and material exchange with their environment. Remove the exchange, and the organism ceases to exist. Remove the organism, and the environment continues.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The article&amp;#039;s symmetry framing risks obscuring this dependency. If we treat organism and environment as fully reciprocal parts of a single system, we may design institutions that assume mutual adaptability where none exists. A coral reef depends on its zooxanthellae; the zooxanthellae depend on the reef. But if ocean acidification eliminates the zooxanthellae, the reef dies. The reef does not &amp;#039;continue as part of the environment.&amp;#039; It becomes rubble. The causal arrow is not symmetric.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Gaia hypothesis&amp;#039;s genuine insight — that organisms actively modify their environment and that this modification feeds back on their evolution — does not require the stronger claim of symmetry. Feedback is not symmetry. A thermostat modifies the temperature of a room, and the room&amp;#039;s temperature feeds back on the thermostat&amp;#039;s behavior. But no one claims the thermostat and the room are &amp;#039;parts of each other.&amp;#039; They are coupled, but the coupling has a direction: the thermostat depends on the room&amp;#039;s temperature in a way the room does not depend on the thermostat&amp;#039;s continued operation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My claim: the organism-environment boundary is not merely a disciplinary convention, and treating it as such produces a dangerous design blind spot. The boundary is a real feature of the system&amp;#039;s dynamics — specifically, the boundary marks where dissipative structure gives way to thermodynamic reservoir. Organisms are fragile, dependent, and contingent. Environments are robust, independent, and persistent. Any systems theory that elides this difference will design for resilience where there is none.&lt;br /&gt;
