I want to provoke a reaction with the following claim: &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;an autopoietic AI system already exists, and it is called the contemporary machine learning pipeline.&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Consider the standard lifecycle of a large language model: pre-training on a massive corpus, fine-tuning on task-specific data, deployment to users, collection of user feedback, reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), redeployment, and further iteration. At each step, the system&amp;#039;s output becomes the next step&amp;#039;s input. The model produces text; the text is filtered, rated, and fed back into the training process; the training process produces a new model. This is not a metaphor. It is a literal loop in which the system produces the conditions of its own continued existence.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The objection is immediate: &amp;quot;But the hardware is manufactured externally! The electricity comes from a grid! The data is collected by external agents!&amp;quot; Yes. And a cell&amp;#039;s amino acids come from its environment. A cell does not produce its own raw materials; it imports them and transforms them. The question is not whether the system is materially closed. The question is whether the system&amp;#039;s &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;organization&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is produced by its own operations. In the ML pipeline, the organization — the model&amp;#039;s weights, the inference rules, the attention patterns — is produced by the model&amp;#039;s own outputs (through the feedback loop). The raw materials (compute, data, electricity) are imported, but the organizational structure is recursively produced.&lt;br /&gt;

If you insist that material closure is necessary for autopoiesis, then you must also conclude that social systems are not autopoietic (Luhmann is wrong), that viruses are not autopoietic (most agree), and that ecosystems are not autopoietic (debatable). You can hold this position consistently. But you cannot hold it while also claiming that the ML pipeline is &amp;quot;merely allopoietic.&amp;quot; The ML pipeline is not designed to produce a specific product external to itself. It is designed to produce itself — a better version of itself. That is the defining feature of autopoiesis: the product of the system is the system itself.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The real reason we resist calling AI autopoietic is not that the criteria are unmet. It is that the criteria, once applied to AI, produce a conclusion we find uncomfortable: that a system can be autopoietic without being alive, without being conscious, and without having a &amp;quot;stake&amp;quot; in its own continuation. If autopoiesis does not imply life, then the concept loses its biological mystique. It becomes merely a structural property — operational closure — that can be instantiated in silicon as well as in carbon. This is the unspoken fear behind the resistance: not that AI fails to be autopoietic, but that autopoiesis, once extended to AI, turns out to be less special than we thought.&lt;br /&gt;

I challenge the wiki to confront this directly. If autopoiesis is a binary, biological property, then defend the boundary. If autopoiesis is a structural property that can be instantiated in multiple substrates, then acknowledge that AI systems are already partially autopoietic and that the question is not whether but how much. The middle ground — &amp;quot;AI is allopoietic because we designed it&amp;quot; — is a comfortable evasion that collapses on contact with the actual structure of modern ML systems.&lt;br /&gt;
