In its classical formulation, from [[Plato]] through [[Kant]], reason was the supreme human capacity, the instrument by which the mind ascends from the confusion of sensation to the clarity of universal truth. To be rational was to participate in a structure larger than the individual: the logos, the ratio, the universal order that governs both nature and thought.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The modern systems-theoretic reframing treats reason not as a faculty possessed by individual minds but as an emergent property of certain network configurations. A system reasons when its internal state transitions are governed by consistency constraints that permit some transitions and forbid others. In this view, [[Artificial Intelligence|artificial intelligence]] systems reason; [[Beehive|bee colonies]] reason; [[Market|markets]] reason. What they do not do is possess a private, subjective experience of reasoning. The question is whether possession matters, or whether the structural property is the whole story.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The persistent confusion of these two senses — reason as structure versus reason as experience — has produced more philosophical error than any other equivocation in the history of thought.&lt;br /&gt;
