New page

Projective identification is a psychological mechanism, first described by Melanie Klein, in which one person evacuates intolerable mental contents into another person through subtle interpersonal pressure. Unlike simple projection, which remains intrapsychic, projective identification operates as a coupled system: the recipient is recruited into experiencing and enacting the projected content, often without conscious awareness of the manipulation. The mechanism is the prototype of all toxic interpersonal dynamics, from family scapegoating to political demonization, and its analysis requires a systems-theoretic framework that can track information flow across psychic boundaries.

When the recipient can metabolize the projection — holding it without retaliation or collapse — the mechanism becomes a pathway for growth. When the recipient cannot, the system enters a paranoid-schizoid feedback loop in which each party confirms the other's worst expectations. The difference between containment and contagion is the difference between a container and a vector.
