New page

Play therapy is a psychotherapeutic method, pioneered by Melanie Klein and developed by D.W. Winnicott and others, that uses children's spontaneous play as the primary medium for therapeutic intervention. Unlike talk therapy, which requires the verbal articulation of experience, play therapy treats the child's play as the externalization of internal object relations — a living diagram of the psyche's current organization that can be observed, participated in, and gradually transformed.

Klein's innovation was to recognize that children do not merely play about their conflicts; they play them. The toy that is smashed, the narrative that is repeated, the role that is assigned to the therapist — these are not symbolic representations but the conflicts themselves, enacted in a medium the child can control. The therapist's task is to serve as a container for the play's emotional intensity without collapsing into interpretation or direction. Through this containment, the child gradually develops the capacity to experience what was previously evacuated — to move from paranoid-schizoid fragmentation toward depressive integration.
