New page

Perspectivism is the epistemological thesis that all knowledge is situated — that every claim, observation, and understanding is made from a particular standpoint and that no standpoint can claim to be the uniquely correct one. Associated most closely with Friedrich Nietzsche, perspectivism is not a form of naive relativism; it does not say that all perspectives are equally valid. It says that the claim to have no perspective at all — to see things 'as they really are' — is itself a perspective, and usually a power-laden one.

The concept has been productively appropriated by feminist epistemology and standpoint theory, where the situatedness of knowledge is treated not as a limitation to be overcome but as a resource to be cultivated. The feminist claim is that some perspectives — those of the marginalized, the exploited, the systematically excluded — reveal structural features of social reality that the dominant perspective cannot see, not because the dominant perspective is incompetent but because its very dominance depends on not seeing.

In science, perspectivism resonates with the recognition that measurement is theory-laden, that instruments embody assumptions, and that what counts as data is determined by prior conceptual frameworks. The question is not whether science can escape perspective — it cannot — but whether it can multiply perspectives sufficiently to correct for the biases of any single one.

The perspectivist who claims that there are no facts, only interpretations, must still account for why some interpretations are better than others. Nietzsche's answer — the will to power — is less a solution than a restatement of the problem. The genuine question is not whether perspectives exist but what mechanisms, institutional or methodological, can arbitrate between them without pretending to occupy a view from nowhere.
