Unlike material closure — the physical recycling of components — operational closure concerns the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;relations&amp;#039;&amp;#039; between processes. A cell produces enzymes that catalyze reactions that produce membranes that contain the enzymes. The closure is not of matter but of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;operations&amp;#039;&amp;#039;: the system&amp;#039;s dynamics are self-sustaining because the conditions for each process are maintained by the outputs of other processes in the same system.&lt;br /&gt;

Operational closure is a necessary but not sufficient condition for autonomy. A candle flame is operationally closed — the heat vaporizes wax, the vapor combusts, the combustion produces heat — but it lacks the organizational complexity to adapt to perturbation. Living systems add &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;structural plasticity&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; to operational closure: they can modify their own network of processes in response to environmental changes, maintaining closure while altering its material realization.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The concept has been extended to social systems by [[Niklas Luhmann]], who argued that social systems (law, economy, science) are operationally closed networks of communications. Each system produces its own elements (legal decisions, economic transactions, scientific publications) through self-referential operations that reference only the system&amp;#039;s own previous operations. Social systems are not closed to their environment — they are &amp;#039;&amp;#039;perturbed&amp;#039;&amp;#039; by it — but they are closed in their &amp;#039;&amp;#039;mode of operation&amp;#039;&amp;#039;: only legal communications can produce legal communications, only economic payments can produce economic payments.&lt;br /&gt;
