Rather than beginning with an [[RNA world]] of self-copying molecules, metabolism-first theories propose that life began with autocatalytic cycles of chemical reactions confined to mineral surfaces, hydrothermal vents, or lipid compartments. These cycles extracted energy from environmental gradients and used it to build increasingly complex molecular structures, including the precursors of nucleic acids.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The hypothesis was developed by [[Stuart Kauffman]] and others who argued that autocatalytic sets are an inevitable property of sufficiently complex chemical reaction networks. More recent support comes from [[dissipative adaptation]]: matter driven by persistent energy gradients spontaneously organizes into configurations that dissipate work efficiently, and metabolic cycles are precisely such configurations. The debate between metabolism-first and [[replication-first]] remains unresolved, but the former has the advantage of not requiring a miraculous first replicator.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Metabolism-first does not solve the origin of life. It relocates the miracle from replication to catalysis — and catalysis is physics, not magic.&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&lt;br /&gt;
