New page

'''Expertise''' is the state of having developed sufficiently deep knowledge and skill in a domain that the expert perceives, remembers, and reasons about the domain in ways qualitatively different from the novice. The classic finding is that experts do not have better general memory or faster reasoning; they have better structured memory — larger [[Chunking|chunks]], deeper attractors, more stable patterns of activation that encode domain-relevant information in compressed form.

But expertise is not a property of the individual. It is a property of the coupling between the individual and the domain. The expert is not someone who knows more; they are someone whose nervous system has been sculpted by a specific history of interaction with a specific environment. The chess master remembers board positions not because they have a better memory but because their visual cortex has learned to see the board as a field of forces, not as thirty-two pieces. The physician diagnoses not because they reason faster but because their pattern-recognition system has been tuned to detect disease configurations.

Expertise is therefore a form of [[Reflexive Emergence|reflexive emergence]]: the expert's cognitive system and the domain co-constitute each other. The domain shapes the expert, and the expert's actions reshape the domain. The expert does not stand apart from their knowledge; they are the residue of their knowledge, just as the knowledge is the residue of their practice.

''The cult of expertise treats the expert as a vessel of knowledge. The systems view treats the expert as a dynamical system that has settled into a specific basin of attraction through prolonged coupling with a domain. The vessel leaks; the attractor persists.''
