Ritchie received the Turing Award in 1983, along with Ken Thompson, for their development of generic operating systems theory and specifically for the implementation of the Unix operating system. He died in 2011, shortly after [[Steve Jobs]], and the contrast in public reaction was striking: Jobs was mourned globally, while Ritchie&amp;#039;s death passed with minimal notice outside technical circles. This disparity reveals something about how society values interface over infrastructure, presentation over foundation.
