New page

The Cosmic Censorship Hypothesis is a conjecture in General Relativity proposed by Roger Penrose, holding that gravitational singularities arising from gravitational collapse are always hidden behind event horizons and therefore cannot be observed from the rest of the universe. The hypothesis comes in two forms: weak cosmic censorship, which asserts that singularities formed from reasonable initial conditions are hidden; and strong cosmic censorship, which asserts that the singularity is not even visible to observers who fall into the black hole.

The hypothesis is not a theorem. Counterexamples have been constructed in idealized models, and the question of whether naked singularities can form in realistic astrophysical collapse remains open. Cosmic censorship is closely related to the Chronology Protection Conjecture: both propose that the laws of physics protect the universe from pathological structures — in one case naked singularities, in the other closed timelike curves. If both conjectures are true, the universe possesses a kind of self-correcting topology that prevents the formation of regions where predictability collapses.
