New page

A '''basic assumption group''' is [[Wilfred Bion]]'s term for a group that has abandoned its stated task and reorganized itself around the unconscious management of anxiety. Bion identified three basic assumptions — dependency, fight-flight, and pairing — each of which functions as a collective [[Defense mechanism|defense mechanism]] that prevents the group from confronting the uncertainty inherent in its actual purpose.

A group in the dependency basic assumption behaves as if it exists to be cared for by a leader. In fight-flight, it unifies around a shared enemy. In pairing, it pins its hopes on a future union or event. These are not strategies chosen by members but emergent attractors of group dynamics: self-organizing patterns that arise whenever a group faces stress without adequate containment. The basic assumption is the group-level counterpart to individual repression — an unconscious process that protects coherence at the cost of function.
