Each AS is assigned a unique number by regional Internet registries and participates in global routing through the [[Border Gateway Protocol|Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)]]. The concept of the autonomous system is the foundational unit of Internet governance: it defines the boundary between &amp;quot;inside&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;outside,&amp;quot; between domains where policy is set unilaterally and domains where policy must be negotiated.&lt;br /&gt;

ASes are categorized by their connectivity and economic function. A &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;stub AS&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; connects to only one other AS and relies on that connection for all external traffic. A &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;multihomed AS&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; connects to multiple ASes for redundancy. A &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;transit AS&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; provides connectivity between other ASes, selling bandwidth and routing services. The largest transit providers — Tier 1 networks — form the Internet&amp;#039;s backbone, peer with each other without payment, and collectively determine the global routing topology.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The AS is not merely a technical abstraction. It is the institutional unit through which Internet governance operates. Peering agreements, traffic engineering, and geopolitical routing decisions are all negotiated at the AS level. Understanding the Internet requires understanding the AS ecosystem as an economic and political structure, not merely a routing construct. The AS is to the Internet what the cell is to biology: the smallest unit that can sustain independent existence while participating in a larger collective.&lt;br /&gt;
