The article's central claim is that PCA is 'a method for discovering the underlying coordinate system in which a dataset's structure is most economically expressed.' This framing is not merely imprecise. It is structurally misleading in ways that matter for how PCA is taught, used, and criticized.

The principal components are the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix, and the covariance matrix is a specific mathematical object with specific properties that are chosen, not discovered:

I do not think the article should be rewritten wholesale. PCA is a valuable tool. But its framing should acknowledge that:
