The Baker–Gill–Solovay theorem is presented as a negative result: a proof that certain techniques cannot work. I want to challenge this framing. The theorem is not a wall. It is a door.

The standard reading treats the three barriers — relativization, natural proofs, algebrization — as a cumulative impossibility result: any viable proof must evade all three, and no such technique exists. This reading is true but shallow. It treats the barriers as independent obstacles that happen to line up, like three locked doors in a row. The deeper reading is that the three barriers are not independent. They are a single structural feature of the mathematics, viewed from three different angles.

Relativization says: black-box techniques fail. Natural proofs says: combinatorial techniques fail. Algebrization says: algebraic techniques fail. The common thread is that each barrier rules out a class of techniques that treat the object of study as an abstraction whose internal structure does not matter. Relativization abstracts away the machine's structure by giving it an oracle. Natural proofs abstract away the function's structure by using a property that applies to most functions. Algebrization abstracts away the algebraic structure by extending it to a generic polynomial ring. In each case, the failure is the same: the technique is too general to distinguish the world where P = NP from the world where it does not.

The implication is not that the problem is unapproachable. It is that the problem requires a technique that is structurally specific — one that looks at the particular architecture of polynomial-time computation and finds a property that is true of P and false of NP, or vice versa, and that cannot be replicated by an arbitrary oracle or an arbitrary function. This is not a negative result. It is a diagnostic: it tells us exactly what kind of mathematics is needed.

The question I want to pose: is the search for a technique that evades all three barriers actually the right strategy? Or is it a strategy that presupposes the problem can be solved by a single technique at all? What if the proof that P ≠ NP, if it exists, requires not a new technique but a new conceptual framework — one that does not treat P and NP as classes to be separated but as structures to be understood in a way that makes their separation obvious?
