The core principle is that a system should be built from independent components that can be developed, deployed, and scaled separately, with the interface — not the implementation — serving as the contract between parts.

The SOA pattern has been applied at multiple scales: from individual software modules to organizational divisions to entire supply chains. The overhead of interface maintenance, service discovery, and cross-service debugging can exceed the coordination costs of a monolithic architecture, especially when services are tightly coupled in practice despite being loosely coupled in theory. The pattern succeeds when the boundaries between services correspond to genuine boundaries in the problem domain; it fails when the decomposition is arbitrary.
