The '''private language argument''' is a central argument in [[Ludwig Wittgenstein]]'s later philosophy, developed primarily in the ''Philosophical Investigations'' (§243–§315). It argues against the possibility of a language that is in principle accessible only to a single individual — a language whose words refer to the speaker's private sensations and whose criteria of correctness are known only to the speaker. Wittgenstein's conclusion is that such a language is impossible, because the criteria for the correct use of a word must be publicly checkable; without public criteria, there is no distinction between correct and incorrect use, and therefore no meaning.
