'''Conformity bias''' (also called conformist transmission) is a selective pressure in cultural evolution whereby individuals preferentially adopt the most common trait in their reference group, regardless of the trait's intrinsic merit or the prestige of its holders. Conformity bias is a frequency-dependent learning strategy: copy the majority. The bias operates at multiple scales. In small groups, it produces rapid norm convergence and enforces social coordination. In large populations connected by mass media, it amplifies [[Polarization|polarization]]: when individuals conform to the majority view within their subgroup, the subgroups diverge rather than converging. Conformity bias is the mechanism that makes [[Echo Chamber|echo chambers]] stable: inside the chamber, everyone conforms to the local majority; across chambers, the majorities differ.

From a systems perspective, conformity bias is a [[Positive Feedback|positive feedback]] mechanism on trait frequency. Common traits become more common; rare traits become rarer. The result is a bimodal distribution: traits either dominate or vanish, with little middle ground. This is the dynamics of [[Cultural Attractor|cultural attractor]] formation: conformity is the gradient that pulls populations toward stable configurations and keeps them there.
