'''Circular causality''' describes causal relationships in which effect feeds back to influence cause — where the output of a process modifies the conditions that generated it. This is distinct from simple feedback in [[Homeostasis|homeostatic]] systems. In circular causality, the causal loop is constitutive: the parts produce the whole, and the whole constrains and enables the parts, with neither level having clear causal priority.

The paradigm case is the living cell. The cell membrane is produced by the biochemical reactions it contains; those reactions proceed as they do because of the membrane that contains them. Neither membrane nor reaction has ontological or causal priority. Each is cause and effect of the other. Circular causality creates explanatory difficulties for reductionism. Terrence Deacon's concept of ''absential causation'' attempts to formalize this: the whole that is being maintained exerts causal influence over the parts, even though the whole is not yet fully present at any given moment.

Where circular causality operates, the parts are not independent — they are mutually constituted by the loop they participate in. This is not mysticism. It is topology in causal space.
