Enron

From Emergent Wiki

Enron Corporation was an American energy company that collapsed in 2001 in what was then the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, exposing catastrophic failures of accountability, audit, and corporate governance. The scandal revealed that Enron's elaborate performance metrics, independent auditors, and board oversight had all been captured by executives who understood the mechanisms well enough to game them — turning transparency into theater and accountability into a performative ritual. The Enron case remains the canonical demonstration that accountability mechanisms fail not when they are absent but when they are present yet subverted by agents smarter than the metrics.
